"Choose Wisely: Tiktok OR Privacy"
Recently Tiktok crosses 1 billion downloads on google play store that means 1/7th population of the world is using Tiktok. We still not know the type of content and its social impact which this app is making or is it right or wrong.
Right now I want to share something very dangerous that I discovered about Tiktok. If you think this makes sense then read and share this article. Today I was feeling very adventures so I downloaded Tiktok and then I realized something weird. You see when you try to record video on Tiktok it asks for permissions like to access the camera, microphone, SD card which is common in almost all the apps but my problem is with something that Tiktok doesn’t ask for your permission for that’s your location you can check this in your settings. Location is not mentioned anywhere. I tried to specify my preferences I selected English videos only yet I saw Hindi & Marathi videos. How does Tiktok know your location?
Just as a precaution I turned off my mobile phone's location and after turning off the location even google maps and Arogyasetu cannot work properly. These important apps cannot work until you give them permission then how Tiktok is still using location and suggesting local languages. Further, I tried to cheat my location using VPN. For e.g. I set my location of US now YouTube is showing ads from the US and other apps are not working but Tiktok is still suggesting the same Hindi, Marathi content. So the weird question is now how Tiktok is doing this?
And I found the answer Tiktok taking data from your SIM card and tracing you by the same. This information is directly taken my from SIM card, Are you understanding how sinister this is? Taking your regional info directly from your sim. Don’t you think it’s unnecessary for a video sharing app and the worst part is there is no warning about the same
After this, I read the complete privacy policy of Tiktok and there were so many objectionable points. Tiktok uses HTTP servers, not HTTPS which is secure. These HTTP servers can be hacked easily. Even if you delete your Tiktok account they can keep your data in their servers.
The biggest problem with TikTok is Artificial Intelligence (AI). "Bytedance", the parent company of Tiktok and it’s an artificial intelligence company their real product does not platform its algorithm. China wants to be superpower using AI by 2030. Do you know the language of a computer is? It’s 0 & 1 which means binary and that’s what you feed when you use Tiktok. Whenever you are watching a video on Tiktok, you are taking a survey and you are constantly feeding information, telling what you like and what you don’t like, telling what you agree with and what you disagree with and all of this information I going to china. In this era of social media artificial intelligence completely changes the game because now a computer will decide what you should watch and there is no search option, this platform controls what you get to watch and this is a big problem.
So let’s talk about China, China has enacted a law in 2017 where if you are a Chinese co. then you have to share the data you collect with the Chinese government and because of this Indian armed forces was given orders to delete 42 Chinese apps. India doesn’t have proper data protection act. We ourselves need to be extra safe.
China doesn’t have freedom of the press, the government controls media and these restrict applies to those people who use Chinese apps. Let’s start talking about Tibet/ Hong Kong/Taiwan. If your video doesn’t get banned then it will definitely be restricted. You can see China has a problem with Tibet tomorrow with Arunachal Pradesh and even Ladakh. If you can’t talk about this stuff, how you will know about it? How you will raise voice and by using these Chinese apps we are supporting china’s version of the internet.
Privacy on the internet is a myth, whenever you use any free product, we are the product and our data is the currency. Should you delete your Tiktok or any other app? The decision is solely yours but you can definitely take some precautions by avoiding using UPI and other payment-related apps on the same phone. Cyber theft is real, keep changing your password and keep your emails safe.
All I want to say is this is not Tiktok vs YouTube. Tiktok is just a popular example of a Chinese app. If you are on Tiktok then this should concern you more than me because your data is at risk. Don’t think any Chinese app is free or cheap because everything’s comes with a cost so the final question is can you pay the price.
